The Redwoods: Planning your engagement session

You just got engaged and now you want to go somewhere cool for your engagement photos! If you love the forest, mild weather, and insanely large trees, the Redwood National Forest may be the spot for you! Okay, you're wanting to plan a Redwoods engagement session—now what?

Step 1: Secure a photographer!

When looking for a photographer for your engagement session, you should seek out someone that you think you will mesh well with. If you want your photos in the forest, look for photographers that have taken photos there before. Find a style you love and meet with your potential photographer before booking! Sign your contract and pay your deposit to book your photographer.

Step 2: Get a permit.

As much as we would love to jump in National Parks around the country, most, if not all, require permits to use the area. This helps keep our national parks clean, maintained, and fund other projects that increase the beauty and vitality of our parks! Always look to see if you need a permit before shooting a session in a park. Fines are hefty, but it's also disrespectful to the grounds and rangers that work there.

Most of the time, your photographer will handle the permit process since they are required to carry it, but do ask if they will be handling it or if you are responsible. Better to be safe than not have a permit! You can find permit information here.

Step 3: Pick out an outfit.

Outfits are subjective, although your photographer may have suggestions. I love giving my clients the freedom to wear what they want, but send inspo in a guide and/or my own pinterest pins. Seeing what past couples have worn with my editing may help couples choose what they think will look best on them in the setting they will be in! If you're ever struggling with an outfit choice, you could ask your photographer what they think will look best!

Step 4: Plan an activity.

I always have my couple pick an activity to do during their adventure engagement session! It helps get rid of some nerves, give you something to do with your hands, and gives you variety in your gallery! Johnnie and Jared chose to read a book during their session in the Redwoods! The photos turned out so sweet, while writing their own story!
